Microsoft Windows Home Edition. Laptop Compaq Presario V6000.Microsoft Calender won't work. Search results only show mswkscal C:\SWSetup\MSWorks\US\Common\Commapp and when I click on that it takes me on to the web and asks if I want to download MSWKscal.wcd now I am stuck. I want to be able to restore the works calender already on the laptop as it contains all diary appointments is this possible please

Yes have done that. Also can you tell me when you use windows restore and say for example take it back to 8 November does it leave all documents after that date intact? I understood that system restore only deletes any alterations to the sytem after 8 November but doesn't touch any documents prepared after that date - is this correct. What else can I try to correct the problem?

Thanks snorkbox now how can I repair calender. Calender will not open . When I click onto it an error comes up saying works cannot access one or more files it needs to run Calender. The files may have been renamed deleted or moved. Try reinstalling works. I have located mwswkscal.wcd as I renamed it mswkscal.ndb. Found that in C:\Documents and Settings\Compaq User\Recent. Can I restore my appoinments

Have you got an up to date backup?
I will investigate where the appointments are actually stored as I have Works8 on this PC. Do not reinstall just yet. :-)

Back up the original mswkscal.wcd file.
To do this, follow these steps:
a. Click Start, click Search, and then click All files and folders.
b. In the All or part of the file name box, type mswkscal.wcd, and then
Note The default location of the mswkscal.wcd file is the following folder:
Drive:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Works
c. Copy the found mswkscal.wcd file to the desktop to create a backup of
the mswkscal.wcd file.
If the mswkscal.wcd file is missing or corrupt then I hope you have a backup. Try the above and get back here with the result of the search.

Just going to do as you suggested. Managed to open backup and last one done was 16/11.

Search results only bring up mswkscal with the internet explorer symbol beside it. (I previously renamed the file to mswkscal.ndb in an attempt to try and open it (suggestion fromn the web) Now when I click on it in the search results it takes me to the web and asks if I want to open or save the file mswkscal.wcd file type wcd_auto-file,184kb

Thats good. Copy the file from the file backup to where you can find it then reinstall Works 8.
Let's know how you get on.
You could rename that .ndb file to .wcd after you reinstall if you like and overwrite with the backup if it still will not open.

OK. Let us start again.
You do have a backup of the .wcd file dated 16/11/2010 I assume in another place.
If so then reinstall Works 8,
Then restore the file from your backup.

sorry snorkbox I am using FBackup 4.4. Having trouble locating the file in the 'select backup catalog or initialisation files

OK. Just reinstall Works 8 at this time.
After you reinstall then go find the .ndb file and rename it to mswkscal.wcd.
The .ndb file will not be overwritten by a reinstallation of Works.
I will go install FBackup so I can teach you how to restore the backup. If you can't restore the backup you may be screwed.

Really appreciate your help, thank you so much. Did a system restore back to 6/11/2010. Did a search and found the file mswkscal.wcd. Copied and saved to desktop. Clicked on it and is says "windows cannot open this file as it needs to know what programme created it. Clicked on selct programme from the drop down list. Chose Adobe Reader 9.4 whcih was highlighted. Adobe couldn't open it as it is not a supported file. Gives other options to open but don't know what to choose from the list

Open the file from Works 8. Did you reinstall works 8 yet?

I don't think you can download it from the Web. :-(
So try right click the file on the desktop and choose open with and choose works 8 then.

oh boy, tried to install it and then it said "the works upgrade is already installed on this machine!!! Still works calender gives the message that"cannot access one or more of the files it needs to run calender.

No worries. I just installed same and it went without a hitch. Run the install when you get it. It will want to remove the old version but does tell you that it WILL keep your calendar. :-).
I would suggest you save the downloaded file onto another media for future use as the original link said it was going to be there for a limited time. :-)

OK. So that means we need to restore your mswkscal.wcd from the backup you made using FBackup 4.4 then.

There is probably going to be a problem with the calendar anyway now I think about it some more. If you used system restore back to 6/11 then when you did the backup using FBack on the 16/11 then the file you backed up was already corrupt I guess.
Do you have earlier restore points?

OK. So go uninstall Works 8 in add/remove programs then. This will not remove the .wcd file on your desktop OR the copy in Works itself. Make another copy of the .wcd file anyway elsewhere.
Then run the installation file again.

This is driving me crazy! I went to add/remove. Tried to uninstall works. Told me to insert works8 disc. Did that. Got message can't uninstall. Installed works8 again over the top of existing one. Still calender won't work. Message comes up Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close.
