I wondered why youse guys were so quiet this AM. I usually see a lot more traffic on F1 after about 2PM our time and as yet, there's just a few people here even now at 4PM our time.

What about the Tsunami warning?

We felt it down here in mosgiel. it wasn't bad, but things were making noises and my bed was slightly shaking

They were saying earlier on that this one compares to the 1931 Napier quake

Also it was not on a major fault line

Gary, some climber being interviewed on steam radio this am said that hundreds of tonnes of rock has fallen off Cathedral Rock on the Port Hills and crashed into the trees above the road tunnel. Maybe the favourite climbs will have been changed forever...

We reminded the Tsunami that it has had it's final warning, so it stayed away.

I hadn't heard that. Sure there wasn't some confusion between Castle Rock (ChCh) and Castle Hill?

My diddlebrain son left Hokitika (after having been under a table with his wife and kids at 4.30m) some time after 7am to go skiing for the day. He had bought a season ticket, but hadn't used it, so decided he was going to get some benefit out of it. And that is probably at Craigieburn, just above Castle Hill.

Just imagine those huge boulders rolling and bouncing across the main west highway if they broke apart...

Hardly. Napier was wiped out in that.

What about the Tsunami warning?

I think a Tsunami only results from underwater quakes; as this one was centred quite a few miles inland, there wasn't an issue.

Whatever, the people of Christchurch must be suffering. As if everybody hasn't suffered today with the loss of 9 lives in a sky diver plane crash ....

:horrified

When is the world sending NZ relief? Please, send at least ONE oversized military aircraft to help.... all of ours are helping in Bamyan and Pakistan ;P

I'm surprised at how localized it was though. only Chch was severely affected.... that and the 9 tourists in the plane at fox glacier

Not completely true - the lazy media and the politicians on focus on the easy targets. Places like Hororata, Darfield etc badly hit, but as there are so few people out there and no airport, the pollies won't be able to grandstand out there like Sideshow Bob, and it is too hard for the media.

You have an apt alias considering that 5 of those killed were locals.

What a pity you spout from the mouth :annoyed::annoyed:

Not funny. Yes Canterbury has damage and needs a big clean up but it doesn't compare at all to Pakistan. Wouldn't be so funny if all that flooding was here.....would it?

This.

Most pics and videos seem to be from the same spot in town (cnr of Manchester/Worcester).

Kind of pathetic, really.

Heard on the scanner that the silly ***** reporter on sky (probably prime too) nearly got arrested trying to get in to town. She was spouting that much BS to the cops trying to get in to the Aves.

Edit; See attached pic for 'before' shot of cnr Manchester/Worcester.

I suppose most of the buildings that got damaged were made of brick. I see one on the right seems to be intack.

Grow up.

The wind's picked up really bad now. Anything that was just barely standing will be blown over tonight I'd imagine. Not to mention we are still getting aftershocks.
