Seeing as how this thread is so popular, it annoys me that it is spelt wrong.

(I often get the spelling wrong in my headings)

What are you? Please do not trifle with national treasures, well known to Google.

Should we paint up the Kauri forests to look like oak trees? Whould you like it if your name's spelling got changed to Dougbee if a zillion computer consultants each bought a cup holder?

;)

Nearly 180,000 views and this is the first complaint about the title spelling!! :D

I'm an editor, so of course it annoys me, but it would, wouldn't it!

You are the second to complain.

The OP had already apologised for the spelling earlier in the same thread.

The whole stoopid game is a waste of bandwidth anywaysThe game started out well, but lost its way I think. I'll hold my breath and not comment about the spelling in the quote :).

Thanks, Jen.
You're a gem!

(So yes, it was only a niggle...
And yes, it only bugged some people...
But yaayy the unexpected joy to find the long-term irritation gone..)

And for those who think that's pedantry - indeed it is.
Where is Graham who used to be "Pedant & proud of it"? We need you back...

I am crestfallen to see that the word assosiation game
has been usurped by this abomination and I for one refuse to take part in it.
This sort of willy-nilly rewriting of history is just the type of
crazy uber-PC rubbish I felt was the province of other less enlightened
sites, I am ashamed of you all! :D

Sweep

Don't worry Laura. There's still a pedant on the forum.

I've been accused many times.

However, I must admit, I didn't want to take over from Graham.

Custom title has been changed to suit.

I feel greatly honoured, Sweep, that my mumble has had such an effect.

(But I still worry about Graham - wondering how/why we scared him away after his years of opinions?)

The history bits of my brain agree with you.
The spelling bits don't.
And as if that's not enough of a problem to tear a pedant apart, now you're talking "Exit thread."

Oh, the guilt you force upon some of us who are innocently happy with the change!

Have you no shame?

I suppose bowdlerising has a long tradition. The whole site runs under the PCWorld banner, so adjusting everything to a lower standard over time is assisting in overall corporate uniformity; an essential goal in these difficult times.
Why not let the written word - printed or on-line - get the blandness of a McBurger? We don't welcome variety in Semolina, it should not happen here either.
Perhaps we should insist that all posts come from a fount of Fairfax generated snippets rather like Hallmark cards; users select a post, pay a small fee, and send it on. No risk of spelling mistakes, and Fairfax could append a cheery but reassuring note from Nortons at the foot of each message. Occasional messages from the political party in power and selected real estate agents could raise the tone of the whole site.
Random misspellings have no more place in the modern corporate world than original or intelligent discussion. It is high time we took steps such as this to enforce standards of blandness and absolute uniformity, consultants must be brought in at once. The only variation to be permitted is in the peeling corners and flashing banners in order to keep faith with the advertisers and their shareholders, we also owe this to our children who must be protected from any deviation from the approved path.

May I humbly suggest a suitable acronym for this delightful prospect?

I hope Graham is OK too.

And your mumble forced me to come out of the closet and openly admit to being pedantic.
