Why do certain sizes of LCDs have a prevalent aspect ratio?

17" and 19" usually use 5:4
15" and 20" usually use 4:3

CRTs are almost always 4:3 ratio

Why are LCDs different and use 5:4?

Isn't it because of their 1280x1024 resolution?
Or are you asking why does 1280x1024 exist?

Actually now that I think about it, wouldn't that mean 1280x1024 on a 4:3 CRT be slightly distorted?

Nobody runs 1280x1024 on a CRT because they're all 4:3 ratio as far as I know.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Display_resolution 4:3 is also the highest use in the common resolutions, and 5:4 is one of the lowest.

You can run 1280x1024 on a CRT but yes it does of course get squashed a bit.

Why wasn't 1280x960 in 4:3 used on 17" LCDs instead?

With our LCD (Sony Bravia) we can adjust it, and we do that for some DVDs to avoid losing the bottom of the picture. It tells you on the DVD what the ratio is.
